The Henri J. M. Nouwen Papers is an open collection of material documenting his writings, classroom activities and source material, enabling the researcher to trace the roots and direction of his thought. Articles, books, case studies, papers, reading notes, lecture notes, classroom handouts and video and cassette tapes of Nouwen are included, as well as articles about him and reviews of his books. His correspondence is not contained in the collection. The papers, complemented by materials on the work of Anton Boisen, Seward Hiltner and Thomas Merton which he collected, represent valuable documentation of major figures in the fields of pastoral psychology and spirituality.

Henri J. M. Nouwen was born on January 24, 1932 in Nijkerk, Holland. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in 1957. He was on the faculty of the University of Notre Dame, the Catholic Theological Institute in Utrecht, Yale Divinity School and Harvard Divinity School, where he taught classes on psychology, Christian spirituality and ministry.
